Spring of Poets 2026

Spring of Poets 2026

A theme with universal resonance

After "beauty" or "borders," it was Freedom that served as the guiding theme. A choice that resonated strongly in the current context, inviting us to see poetry not as a fixed art, but as a movement of emancipation. As the Poetry Center emphasized, it was about celebrating a freedom "far from standardized ideas," capable of breaking what paralyzes our societies.

The highlights and successes of the programming

The success of 2026 relies on a successful blend between traditional institutions and everyday spaces:

  • The metro as an open-air library: Thanks to the historic partnership with RATP, millions of travelers were able to read verses displayed on the platforms and train pendants. A poetry contest organized by the transit authority also saw a record number of participants this year.
  • The television offensive: France Télévisions made a strong impact with the short program "Stances." One hundred video clips featuring performers from all backgrounds — from celebrities to complete strangers — recited texts from world poetry, making the genre accessible during prime time.
  • A youth mobilized: In schools, from kindergarten to high school, the "I read and here I am free" campaign (a nod to Fernando Pessoa) culminated on the spring equinox, March 20, with a simultaneous national reading.

Faces and voices

Besides Isabelle Adjani, prominent figures such as MC Solaar and the Belgian poet Lisette Lombé supported the event. The regional events were also significant, notably:

  • In Île-de-France: The Est Ensemble library network made a strong impression with bilingual readings (French-Arabic) of texts by the Syrian poet Maram Al Masri.
  • In Nancy and Amiens: Poet residencies in schools and "poetic treasure hunts" helped refresh the image of the subject among the younger generation.

A success that continues

Although the official event has ended, its impact continues. University competitions, such as the one at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, will announce their winners in May, and the anthologies created for the occasion remain top sellers in independent bookstores, confirming that poetry has once again become a "vital force" in the hearts of the French.

« Je lis et me voici libre. » — This quote from Fernando Pessoa has been the mantra of this March, reminding us that poetry remains the widest realm of rebellion and imagination.

The Literary Hotels Network: A Burning Hearth of Poetry in 2026

Beyond the public programming, the Société des Hôtels Littéraires transformed its establishments into true "poetic embassies" during this 28th edition. Driven by its founder, the bibliophile Jacques Letertre, several key moments marked the month of March:

  • At the Arthur Rimbaud Literary Hotel (Paris 10th): On March 21, for World Poetry Day, the establishment hosted a special event centered on the collector Beppe Manzitti. He officially presented his donation of rare Yves Bonnefoy books to the hotel's collection during a conference led by the poet Alain Borer (President of the Association of Friends of Rimbaud).
  • "Poetic Window" Contest: In partnership with the French Booksellers' Union, the Literary Hotels sponsored a national challenge inviting booksellers to decorate their shop windows around the theme of freedom. The winners were rewarded with immersive stays in the various hotels of the group (Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, Nancy, Biarritz, and Paris).
  • Meetings and Exhibitions: Events dedicated to Max Jacob and contemporary poetry have marked the calendar, strengthening the connections between the hotel residents and Parisian literary circles.
